Question authority, not your mother

Dear Cake clubbers,

I thought I'd share with you a project by a rather special cake club member, mummy head chef.

This years Christmas cake, traditional fruit cake, an age old recipe probably one of nanny head chef's (but just maybe nicked from Delia)

anyway, here it is,

and here is the inspiration,

Just out of shot is Gordan the Gorilla. Normal girls had dolls, I had gorillas, but that's for another day.

Christmas party report coming soon!

The One That (Nearly) Got Away

Like all good IT projects, such as [insert project of your choice here], this posting is long overdue, the cake having been provided on 27th October! But, for the historical record, and because its been a long snowy week, here's the obligatory posting.

For reasons which I, er, forget, I was challenged to provide a cake for CEPR Cake Club.

[Note to self: next time check the prize BEFORE entering a competition.]

As I am duly banned from the kitchen at home, other than to wash up, I had to be really nice to my long suffering wife for quite a while to convince her to make one of her famous banana cake's for me.

Here's the result:

I then had to go home and, after washing up, be nice all over again to obtain the recipe. The costs were obviously high, so please do use it so my efforts were not in vain:

Ingredients

2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
3 ripe bananas (mashed)
1 egg
1/4 cup butter, melted and cooled
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 cup walnuts (optional)

Method

Mix all the ingredients together

Pour into a grease paper lined loaf tin

Throw it in the oven for 50-60 minutes at 170C

Conclusion

Very yummy it was too, even if I do say so myself.

All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind - Aristotle 384 BC - 322 BC

Morning Cake Clubbers,

Today's choice of wise words are inspired by today's chef, not because her mind is degraded but  because she is rather busy. But there is always time for cake.

Claudia has  brought us a blueberry and raspberry sour cream sponge, recipe sans raspberries can be found here

Photos coming soon.

Head Chef

White Chocolate Tiramisu with Brandy
Ingredients
150g white chocolate
1 egg
2 tbsp caster sugar
2 x 250g tub of mascarpone
2 x 175g packet of sponge fingers
50g brown sugar
300 ml milk
100ml Brandy
1 vanilla pod

Method
1. Roughly chop 100g of the white chocolate and melt in a small bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Remove and allow to cool a little. Meanwhile, beat the egg yolk with the caster sugar in a large bowl until pale and thick. Beat in the mascarpone until really smooth, then stir in the melted white chocolate.
2. In a separate clean bowl, whisk the egg white and fold it carefully into the egg and mascarpone mixture until well combined.
3. Make a syrup by placing the brown sugar and vanilla pod in a saucepan with 300 ml milk. Bring slowly to the boil on a medium heat for 2 minutes. Turn off the heat, add 100 ml Brandy and leave to slightly cool for 5 minutes.
4. Now, dip half the sponge fingers in the cooled liquid and use them to line the base of the serving dish. Spread half the mascarpone mixture over the biscuits. Cover it with another layer of the biscuits dipped in the liquid, then spread over the remainder of the mascarpone mixture.
5. Grate the remaining white chocolate over the top. Cover and chill in the fridge for a minimum of 6 hours, or ideally overnight, to allow the biscuits to absorb the juices and soften.

CC Update

right, as some of you may know, I've been experimenting with bringing our little cake club into the digital age, and here is the result.

I hope you enjoy the new cake club,  anyone with a google account can write their own posts, just let head chef know,

here is the first cake of the new era, its supposed to look like this but probably looks awful after a jaunt on the Hammersmith and City Line.
